Going Incognito: How and When to Hide Your Caller ID
Quick Answer: To hide your number for a single call in the UK, simply dial 141 before the phone number (e.g., 141 07700 900123).
Privacy cuts both ways. While we often focus on identifying who is calling us, there are valid reasons why you might want to call someone else without revealing your own digits. Whether you are calling a business for a quote and don't want callbacks, or you are a professional using a personal phone for work, withholding your number is a useful tool.
Method 1: The '141' Prefix (Per Call)
This is the standard method for UK landlines and mobiles. It works on a call-by-call basis.
- Open your dialer.
- Type 141.
- Type the full number you want to call.
- Hit dial.
The person at the other end will see "Private Number," "Withheld," or "Unknown" on their screen.
Method 2: Permanent Settings (Mobile)
If you want to hide your number for every call you make, you can change your system settings.
For iPhone
- Go to Settings > Phone.
- Tap Show My Caller ID.
- Toggle the switch Off.
For Android
- Open the Phone App.
- Tap the three dots > Settings.
- Tap Calls (or Supplementary Services).
- Tap Caller ID and select Hide number.
When to Use It (And When Not To)
✅ Good Uses
- Returning a missed call from an unknown number (to check who it is safely).
- Getting quotes from companies to avoid future spam.
- Teachers or doctors calling clients from personal phones.
❌ Downsides
- Rejection: Many people automatically reject "Private" calls (using the tools in our other guides!).
- Trust: Tradespeople or delivery drivers may not answer if they can't see who is calling.
- Emergency: 999 services can usually still see your number regardless of settings.
Can My Number Still Be Traced?
Yes. Hiding your Caller ID prevents the recipient from seeing your number on their display. It does NOT hide your number from the telephone network provider, the police, or emergency services. If you use a hidden number to harass someone, the police can easily obtain the records from the network to identify you.
